This item is called a “tsuba”, which is the hand guard for a Japanese sword. Often tsuba are decorated with beautiful inlay work or etched scenes and patterns. This tsuba is shaped in the “mokko gata” style as a small slightly scalloped oval. One side depicts a footbridge over a stream with foliage and mountains in the distance. The other side depicts a little greenery at the bottom. Touched with a little copper inlay. Only one side cut out, designed for a short sword. Weighs 80.6 grams. The tsuba measures about 2 ¾” long by 2 ½” wide, and accommodates a sword of about 1 1/8” wide and 8mm thick on one end. Excellent condition. Light wear commensurate with age.
