This item is called a “tsuba”, which is the hand guard for a Japanese sword. Often tsuba are decorated with beautiful inlay work or etched scenes and patterns. This tsuba is shaped in the “mokko gata” style as a scalloped border edge, with beautiful etched floral and leaf pattern on both sides. Hand painted gold Japanese characters. Side cutouts filled with black metal plugs. Weighs 164.6 grams. The tsuba measures about 3 ¼” long by 3 1/8” wide, and accommodates a sword of about 1 1/8” wide and 8mm thick on one end. Excellent vintage condition. Light wear commensurate with age.
